Payel Das

(University of Surrey, United Kingdom): Her research interests focus on uncovering the evolutionary histories and dark matter content of nearby galaxies through forensic studies of the chemical and dynamical properties of their constituent stars. Her expertise lies in building equilibrium dynamical models that connect stellar motions to dark matter, as well as in dynamical labeling, which classifies stars according to their orbits. She is also an expert in the application of Bayesian Machine Learning, for example, in determining the ages of three million stars. She has developed an accelerated Hamiltonian Monte Carlo method for sampling probability distribution functions, which additionally relies on dynamical theory. Finally, she is an expert in classifying stellar populations based on their chemical abundance patterns and relating these to their evolutionary histories.
